World Polio Day 2026: This Is Rotary in Action!

Sometimes it is not the size of a Rotary club that defines its impact. It is the commitment, passion, and heart of its members.
Westchester NY Rotary was chartered on December 18, 2020, with Syed Alirahi serving as its Charter President. He later served as District Governor in 2024-2025. From the start, this family-based Rotary club has shown what dedicated Rotarians can accomplish when they come together in the spirit of Service Above Self.
With just 16 members, the club continues to carry out meaningful service activities supporting people in need, both locally and around the world.
To me, this is Rotary!
One of Westchester NY Rotary’s signature annual initiatives is its World Polio Day program. Each year, the club brings people together to raise awareness and funds to support Rotary’s ongoing commitment to ending polio.
And every contribution matters. Through Rotary’s partnership with the Gates Foundation, each dollar raised for PolioPlus can be matched with an additional two dollars, effectively tripling its impact.
Rotary Clubs Coming Together
This year’s gathering on October 24th beautifully demonstrated the power of Rotary fellowship and collaboration. Rotarians from several clubs joined together, including:
Rotary Club of Peekskill • White Plains Rotary Club • Bronxville Rotary Club • Bronx Rotary Club • Scarsdale Rotary • Rotary Club of New Rochelle • Sunshine NY Rotary • Westchester NY Rotary • Rotary Club of Resilient Spirit • Metro NYC Rotary • Blooming Rose Rotary • Yonkers East Yonkers Rotary. Last but not least, the South Shore Rotary Club.
It was truly wonderful to see different clubs standing side-by-side for one common cause: a world free from polio.
Our District Governor Maksud Chowdhury also showed his commitment to this important cause by participating in the early-morning Walk to End Polio at the Brooklyn Bridge.
Later, PDG and Vice Governor Marty Shulman joined the Westchester gathering and added some fun to the fundraising by auctioning his hat, raising $120! He also personally donated another $200 toward the cause.
Thank you, PDG Marty Shulman, for your generosity and continued commitment to Rotary!
Service That Reaches Across the World
Another meaningful part of the event was a special table featuring beautiful handmade items created by hardworking village artisans in Pakistan. Rotarians purchased items from the table, turning fellowship into another opportunity to support a worthy cause.
This gathering was about much more than fundraising. It was about awareness, fellowship, collaboration, compassion and service.
A relatively new and small Rotary club brought together fellow Rotarians and friends around one of Rotary’s most historic humanitarian commitments. That is the power of Rotary.
This is Rotary.
A heartfelt salute to Westchester NY Rotary, the Alirahi family, its dedicated members, participating Rotary clubs, and everyone who contributed to making this World Polio Day gathering meaningful.
Small club. Big heart. Big impact.
Together, we continue to raise awareness, raise funds, and keep alive Rotary’s promise of a polio-free world.
Hats off to Westchester NY Rotary and the Alirahi Family!
